HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner S.P. Singh on Monday asserted that there was no scope for any retrenchment of municipal staff following the pact with Ramky for taking up the Integrated Solid Waste Management Project. “We have adequately addressed the concerns of workers. We have assured and re-assured them in light of misinformation about loss of jobs. We have clearly stated that nothing of that sort will happen and sweeping work does not come under the project. Workers welfare is our top priority,” he said at a press conference. Mr. Singh pointed out that only one union had gone on strike and rest of the 12 unions under a Joint Action Committee were giving “total support” to the administration to ensure no disruption in civic functions. Garbage lifting hitHowever, he said the 800-odd workers belonging to the agitating union had affected transport services and lifting of garbage in different parts. “We have taken up a contingency plan and lifted 60 p.c. garbage pressing into service 71 government and 229 private tippers. We have engaged more workers wherever needed and have been in touch with colony welfare associations and bulk garbage generators seeking their cooperation,” he said. Plea to unionsMaking an earnest appeal to the union to return to the negotiating table, Mr. Singh said the agreement copy was given to all unions with the request to come out with specific suggestions and objections to the project.
