dated July 8, 1959: Convention of new party

Mr. C. Rajagopalachari, founder of the Swatantra Party, addressing a Press Conference in Bombay on July 7, said that the preparatory convention of the party would be held in Bombay on August 1 and 2. Mr. Rajagopalachari said the earlier decision to hold the convention at Ahmedabad was changed because, essentially, this western metropolis was found to be a more convenient venue and also because he found that his party had been very well received in Bombay. He said that his party would give complete freedom to its members on all matters except on matters of fundamental importance. This would be a “good experiment” in the working of democracy, he said.
