Toshiba JSW to set up turbine unit in Chennai

Special Correspondent

Signs MoU with Tamil Nadu Government

Hopes to invest $160 m in the plant

Construction to start this month

CHENNAI: Toshiba JSW Turbine and Generator Pvt. Ltd. (Toshiba JSW), a joint venture between JSW Group and Japan-based electronic goods major Toshiba Corporation, is setting up a facility here to manufacture steam turbines and generators for thermal power plants.

Toshiba JSW has just inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Government to facilitate the process of setting up a production unit.

The MoU allows Toshiba JSW to lease land for the construction of manufacturing facilities on a site in Chennai, says a release from the company. Toshiba JSW was established in September last. Toshiba holds 75 per cent ownership rights in the company. The balance 25 per cent is held by JSW Group (JSW Steel five per cent and JSW Energy 20 per cent).

Toshiba JSW will use the proposed facility to manufacture mid- to large-sized steam turbines and generators, ranging from 500 MW to 1,000 MW, for super-critical thermal power plants in India.

The plant will come up about 18 km north of downtown Chennai. The site has a ground area of around 400,000 sq. m. Toshiba JSW is hoping to invest about $160 million in plant and manufacturing equipment over five years from fiscal year 2009, says the release.

“Construction is scheduled to start this month and the manufacturing is expected to start in January 2011,” the release quoted Itaru Ishibashi, Managing Director of Toshiba JSW, as saying. “Keihin Operations, Toshiba’s power equipment production facility in Yokohama, will support Toshiba JSW in ramping up manufacturing, and in working towards establishing an independent production scale of 3,000 MW a year. Toshiba JSW anticipates sales of $400 million by the end of fiscal 2015,” the release quoted him as further saying. Toshiba JSW would start recruiting people soon the release said.
