21 held for rioting
NEW DELHI: The police have arrested 21 people for allegedly attacking a demolition squad that had gone to pull down some illegal structures on Gram Sabha land at Swaroop Nagar in North-West Delhi on Monday.
They have been arrested on charges of obstructing public servants on duty, assaulting them, unlawful assembly, indulging in violence leading to destruction of public property and attempt-to-murder.
The violence broke out around noon on Monday when the demolition squad was chalking out a strategy to bring down the illegal constructions. Angry residents allegedly set afire five vehicles, including those of the area Sub-Divisional Magistrate and two Station House Officers of police stations, and hurled stones at the squad injuring over a dozen people. The SDM and an Assistant Commissioner of Police were among those injured.
