VISAKHAPATNAM: Taking a serious view of the poor maintenance of some welfare hostels, District Collector J. Syamala Rao on Wednesday suspended five wardens and issued charge memos to seven. Mandal special officers made surprise inspections of 53 hostels from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on July 6. They included 22 BC and 28 SC hostels and 3 of STs. The inspection covered issues like whether the wardens were living at that village/town, the staff and the warden were coming to duty on time, implementation of the menu, work of tutors, provision of boiled water, regular visits by primary health centre doctors, hygiene in kitchens and sanitation. Mr. Syamala Rao said it was identified that in 12 hostels the maintenance was not up to the mark. The action was based on reports submitted after the inspection. Wardens of BC Boys Hostels at Chepala Uppada (Bhimunipatnam mandal) and Kintali (Madugula), the Social Welfare Girls Hostel at Kintali, the SC Boys Hostel at Lalamkoduru (Rambilli) and Tribal Welfare Ashram School at Dokuluru in Paderu mandals were suspended. The Assistant Social Welfare Officer, Assistant Backward Classes Welfare Officer and Assistant Tribal Welfare Officer concerned and the Medical Officers concerned have been asked to give an explanation for not visiting 31 hostels regularly.
