Letters to the Editor
Those who have followed the growth and development of Air India since the days of the legendary J.R.D. Tata can only feel sorry about the state of the national airline. The Maharaja was the creation of the extremely innovative S.K. Kooka, who was the Commercial Director of Air India. Under his guidance, Air India provided a real Maharaja service to passengers. The in-flight service was to be experienced to be believed. The meals that came from ‘Chef Air’ were fabulous. Passengers were pampered with gifts. J.R.D. Tata took personal interest in maintaining the Maharaja image of Air India. Any organisation that does very well is bound to attract the government’s attention. The government drove the first nail in the coffin of Air India when it decided to nationalise the air transportation industry in 1953. Fortunately, JRD is not alive to see the Air India employees not even being paid salaries on time. M.V. Nahusharaj, Bangalore
