Letters to the Editor
I think it is time we all agreed that Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises homosexuality should be scrapped. Homosexuals continue to be discriminated against in social, political, and cultural life. Most hospitals give secondary treatment or refuse to treat the LGBTs afflicted with HIV/AIDS. The law of the land fuels this indifferent attitude towards homosexuals. It is important for us to arrive at a consensus on legalising homosexuality. Dr (Major) D.J. Borah, Thiruvananthapuram Since the Delhi High Court gave its verdict legalising gay sex between consenting adults, numerous letters have appeared lauding it. Thankfully, there have been critical letters too. There is no conclusive proof yet that homosexuality is wired into one’s genes. Consenting adults have been indulging in it and will continue to do so, regardless of any law. I am sure no homosexual has been caught from a private surrounding by the police and charged under Section 377. When hundreds of issues are waiting to be tackled, is not fighting for the gay lifestyle an obscene priority?Jay Ravi, Toronto
