NARROW ESCAPE: A private bus that crashed into a house compound at Kadavoor in Kollam on Thursday, injuring 29 passengers. KOLLAM: Twenty-nine passengers were injured in a bus accident at Kadavoor on Thursday evening. The accident occurred at 6 p.m. when the private bus attempted to overtake another bus through the wrong side of the median. The buses were coming from the Anchaulmoodu side towards Kollam. The accident occurred on the Kadavoor course of the road which has a sharp curve with a median. Eyewitnesses said the bus swerved to the right to avoid hitting a bus coming from the opposite direction and crashed through the compound wall of a house. The injured, including the driver, had been admitted to the District Hospital. However, the driver told the police that a mechanical flaw to the steering wheel caused the accident. SpeedingBut eyewitness and the local people said that in the race between private buses, drivers often took the buses at breakneck speed in both directions through the wrong side of the median. Kollam Revenue Divisional Officer R. Sudheendran; Tahsildar M. Vishwanathan; and Additional District Magistrate C.R. Joseprakash visited the injured at the hospital. The district administration announced a relief of Rs.1,000 each to the injured.
