Supreme Court issues notice to State
J. Venkatesan
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to the Andhra Pradesh government on a special leave petition against a judgment of the Andhra Pradesh High Court rejecting the plea for naming the police officers involved in the encounter killings of eight persons in Nallamala forest near Daraboina Penta and Nekkanti Palutla villages in Prakasam district in July 2006.
A Bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice P. Sathasivam issued notice on the SLP filed by K. Radha whose sister was one of those killed in an encounter and directed that the matter be tagged with similar petitions pending in the court.
The petitioner said that she filed a writ petition for a direction to disclose the names of the police officers and it was rejected on the ground that the same could be obtained under the Right to Information Act.
The Information Officer also refused to provide the names on the ground that it would impede the investigation.
Hence the present appeal seeking to quash the impugned judgment dated February 6 and a direction to the State government to disclose the names of the police officers.
