Revealing interview

The three-part interview with Mahinda Rajapaksa (July 6, 7 and 8) was invigorating and revealing. It reflected the commitment and confidence of the Sri Lankan President. It also provided an insight into the strategy he evolved to bring the war against the LTTE to its logical conclusion. He deserves praise for liberating the Sri Lankan Tamils from the 30-year ordeal under the LTTE’s ruthless rule.

K. Nehru Patnaik,

Visakhapatnam

After getting rid of the cancerous LTTE from the body politic of Sri Lanka, President Rajapaksa seems confident and determined to build a strong and united country. It is only natural for him to be proud of his hard-fought victory. We hope he will be magnanimous in victory and treat the minorities with dignity.

The Sri Lankan Tamils and Muslims too would do well to merge with the mainstream. India, as the immediate neighbour, can play a positive role by assisting in the rebuilding of the war-ravaged northern Sri Lanka.

Comdt. G.V. Mathew (retd.),

Thiruvananthapuram

Mr. Rajapaksa’s words should be translated into action soon. The conditions in the IDP camps may be good but they are still camps, not homes where people can live with dignity. The real test for the President is to devolve powers to the Tamils as quickly as possible after holding elections in the north and the east.

D.B.N. Murthy,

Bangalore

There is no trace of ill–will or hatred for Tamils in Mr. Rajapaksa’s statements. If he can translate his words into action, Sri Lanka can and will become a prosperous country soon. But if the Sri Lankan government goes back on its commitment, it may not be long before another ethnic struggle starts.

C. G. Sivakumaran,

New Delhi

The interview with President Rajapaksa has cleared many doubts from the minds of the people. The manner in which he has handled the post-war situation bears testimony to his maturity. Now that the LTTE has been eliminated, the Sri Lankan government should waste no time in providing equal rights to the Tamils.

G. Ramachandran,

Thiruvananthapuram
