Corrections and clarifications

  • The last paragraph in a report “Left parties will meet to promote unity” (July 8, 2009) was “Admitting that they did not function properly as a front, he [CPI General Secretary A.B. Bardhan] said voters were alienated due to ‘fascist practices’ by ‘some in power.’” The CPI clarifies that the phrase used by Mr. Bardhan in his press conference was “bossist practices”.

  • It was incorrect to have said “the Indian Embassy in South Africa” in the last paragraph of a report “Warangal software engineer shot dead in South Africa” (July 8, 2009). India and South Africa are members of the Commonwealth. Mutual diplomatic missions in Commonwealth countries are called high commissions/consulates, and not embassies.

  • Gholam-Hussein Mohseni-Ejei [Iran’s Intelligence Minister] was misspelt as Gholam Hossein Nohseni Ejei in the fourth paragraph of “Obama faces a Persian rebuff” (Editorial page, July 2, 2009).

  • “A proud landmark” (Editorial, July 2, 2009) referred to the Pamban bridge as a lift bridge with two leaves. The Pamban bridge refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter. The railroad bridge is a still-functioning double-leaf bascule bridge section that is raised to let ships pass under.

  • Mr. Rajinder Bhandari, referred to in the fourth paragraph of a report “Five State BJP leaders losing job for poll debacle” (July 5, 2009), is the Punjab State unit President. The words “State President Punjab”, given in brackets after Mr. Bhandari’s name, were edited from the copy.

  • A standalone photograph titled “Just cause” (Kerala, July 8, 2009, page 4) showed Mr. Simon Britto, MLA, with “growth-challenged persons on the Assembly premises in Thiruvananthapuram. We repeat a part of the clarification issued on December 9, 2006: “... there are no accepted alternatives in the general language, since terms such as a person of restricted growth have gained little currency. The Spastics Society of Tamil Nadu clarifies that other acceptable terms are ‘a person of smaller stature’ and a ‘vertically challenged person’.”

  • Sarwan’s 62 was off 59 balls in West Indies’ score of 186 for seven as given in the scoreboard, and not 58-ball 62 (5x4, 1x6) that guided the West Indies to 185 for seven, as mentioned in the tenth paragraph of a report “Dhoni’s heroics takes India through” (“Sport”, July 5, 2009).
