Arrested on graft charge

CHENNAI: Officials of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption arrested two employees of Chennai Metrowater, including an Assistant Engineer, and a man on charges of corruption here on Thursday.
According to sources in the agency, K. Prafulla Kumar (30) of Circular Road at Kodambakkam had applied for the transfer of a Metrowater connection in his mother’s name.
Assistant Engineer T.C. Ranjan (54) of Kovilambakkam and Electrical Pumpsman M.C. Panneerselvam (42) of Kundrathur demanded a bribe of Rs. 25,000 of which Rs. 15,000 was told be paid as first instalment.
Based on a complaint lodged by Mr. Kumar, the DVAC registered a case. A special team, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police R. Murali and Inspector G. Balasubramanian laid a trap and arrested Ranjan, Panneerselvam and a tout, S. Ramamurthy (40) of Poonamallee, who facilitated the deal.
When the investigators searched the office, Rs.38,000 was found strewn around the building. Further investigation is on.
