Issue of security of Indian students raised at interaction
|
HYDERABAD: Parents of students pursuing higher education in Australia grilled a visiting Australian government delegation at an interaction organised here on Thursday by posing numerous questions about the safety of these students.
The team, headed by Colin Walters, Group Management, International Group, Department of Education, Employment & Workplace Relations, and comprising Paul Evans, assistant commissioner, Victoria, fielded questions from parents for 45 minutes. Higher Education & NRI Affairs Minister D. Sridhar Babu, Principal Secretary Lakshmi Parthasarathi and Collegiate Education Commissioner S. Someswar, were present.
V. R. Deshpande of Senior Citizens’ Association said there was no immediate action by officials following attacks on Indian students.
Mr. Colin said a plan announced by the Australian government to protect the interests of international students would soon be given a legislative backing. Perpetrators of the attacks were arrested and trials were on. Mr. Colin said nowhere in the world people were completely safe, including the US, UK.
