BJP calls for a review of MRTS

Party asks YSR to entrust project to public sector company

HYDERABAD: BJP president Bandaru Dattatreya has urged Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy to review the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) project and entrust its execution to a public sector company to ensure transparency.

In a letter to Dr. Reddy, he said that BJP’s stand had been vindicated as it had been stating from the beginning that the whole concept of MRTS as given to Maytas was ill-conceived. He said the project should be studied in detail, in view of the other projects like MMTS Phase-II, ORR , PVN Expressway and radial roads.

He also wanted widespread discussion in the Assembly as well as consultation with experts and environmentalists on the project.

Escalating costs

The cost of the project went up from Rs. 2,580 crore in 2003 to Rs. 12,132 crore in 2008 and a further delay might push it up to Rs.15,000 crore. “Hence, the project must be implemented without any delay”, he observed.
