PUDUCHERRY: Laying emphasis on fresh water fish culture, the Fisheries Department roped in students from various government schools in Puducherry to celebrate the Fish Farmers Day, on Friday, with scores of events including a rally, essay and drawing competitions. It was in 2001 that the Government of India declared July 10 as Fish Farmers Day to honour scientist Hiralal Choudhary, who had successfully conducted induced breeding in Indian major carp fish in 1957, officials of the department said. Through the Fish Farmers Development Agency of the department, a series of events starting with an essay contest for students of Chevalier Selane Government Higher Secondary School at Kalapet was held on July 8. The school offered a paper in fisheries for Class XI and XII, Director of Fisheries G. Ramalakshmi said. On July 9, a drawing contest was held for students at Jawahar Bal Bhavan in two categories of age group – 5 to 12 years and 13 to 16 years. “For students between 5 to 12 years, the topic given was aquarium fish and for the other category, the topic was inland fish and its nutritional aspects. Fifty eight students took part in the contest and three winners in each category would receive the prizes,” P. Govindasamy, Fisheries Extension Officer of the agency said. As a culmination of the celebrations, a rally to create awareness among the public on the importance of fresh water fish culture was held. About 200 students from V.O.C. Government Higher Secondary School and Calve College Higher Secondary School took part in the rally which started at the Gandhi Statue on the Beach Road and ended at the Bharathi Park. The students carried placards with messages such as “East or West fish is the best” and “Grow fish, eat fish”. Secretary to Government, Cholleti Prabhakar flagged off the rally. Chief Executive Officer of the agency M. Shamshaad was present.
