In Vellore district 36 roads have been taken up in 25 packages In Tiruvannamalai district 16 roads have been taken up in 10 packages VELLORE: Road improvement works taken up by the National Highways, Vellore Division, for a total length of 366.76 km at a total cost of Rs. 58.91 crore under the Pradhan Manthri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) (Prime Minister’s Rural Roads Scheme) for the year 2007-08 in Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts are under various stages of progress. The works are funded by the Ministry of Rural Development, under the Bharat Nirman project. In Vellore district, 36 roads for a total length of 224.81 km have been taken up in 25 packages at a cost of Rs. 40.55 crore, while 16 roads for a length of 141.95 km have been taken up in 10 packages at a cost of Rs.18.36 crore in Tiruvannamalai district. A visit to Chitheri near Vellore where one of the works, namely the road improvement work for a length of 4.015 km taken up at a cost of Rs.61.10 lakhs between Pennathur and Chitheri on the Central Jail-Amirthi Road, revealed that blue metal had been dumped on the roadside for blacktopping the road after the initial gravelling. The work, started on February 28, 2009 is slated for completion on September 27, 2009. According to the Divisional Engineer, National Highways, Vellore, the work in the Amirthi Road is progressing as per schedule and would be completed by September. For the year 2008-09, proposals have been sent to the State government for sanction of road improvement works for a length of 8.3 km at a cost of Rs.2.2 crore in Vellore district. They included 4.8 km in Poottuthacku-Melakuppam Road, 2.8 km in Banavaram-Perunkanji Road and 0.7 km in Ratnagiri-Kilminnal Road. The State government would sanction the works only after approval by the Centre. Tenders would be finalised and the works taken up after the sanction is obtained, he said.
