dated July 11, 1959: Teachers’ training

With a view to improving the standard of English teaching in schools, the Madras Government will implement a scheme, prepared and submitted by the Regional Representative of the British Council in Madras, for the running of in-service re-training courses for teachers of English in the schools of the State. The Government hope that schools under private management will take full advantage of the scheme and send their English teachers for the course. It has been accepted by Government, states a press note, that the efficiency of instruction in the study of English in the schools of the State should be improved. This has been emphasised in the memorandum submitted by them to the Official Language Commission in discussing the study of languages in educational institutions.
