dated July 11, 1959: Atomic energy research

In the first such transaction ever undertaken by the United States Government, the Government of India and the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission on July 10 signed in Washington a contract for the lease of fifteen tons of heavy water for use in India’s atomic energy research programme. The contract, the first of its kind, provides that the heavy water will be used as an initial inventory for India’s atomic energy reactor located at Trombay. This reactor will be used by India for conducting research into the peaceful uses of atomic energy.
