PUDUKOTTAI: Work on the implementation of the underground drainage scheme, sanctioned at an outlay of Rs.32.16 crore, has been in full swing. Being implemented with a grant of Rs.9.65 crore under the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project - Phase III and a loan of Rs.12.05 crore from the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services, the scheme also envisages a public contribution of Rs.10.46 crore. This apart, a sewage treatment plant would be set up at an outlay of Rs.6 crore. The town’s population as per 2001 census is 1.09 lakh and the scheme has been designed to suit a population of 1.57 lakh, taking into account the future growth. Pipelines to a cumulative length of 150 km for collection of sewage water will be laid in all the wards in the town. As many as 5,485 manholes will be set up. “In all, 22,000 domestic and commercial establishments will be linked to the underground drainage system,” says Municipal Commissioner M. Elangovan. The rate of disposal at the treatment plant to be set up near Marupanikulam would be 10.62 million litres per day (MLD). The project has been designed to handle 14.13 MLD by the year 2038. Work to a cumulative length of 50 km had been completed so far in areas including Kamarajapuram, Periyar Nagar, Nizam Colony and Tiruvalluvar Nagar, he says. The work is expected to be completed by October 2010.
