Devotees made to lie in pits

Staff Reporter

As part of fulfilling their vow during a temple festival

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Forty-two devotees, including few children, were made to lie in small pits over which a priest walked over as part of fulfilling their vow during a temple festival near here on Friday.

The Soolakarai police have filed a case against the priest of Muthalamman Temple, Perumal, and some temple functionaries under the provisions of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Rituals and Practice Burying Alive Persons Act, 2002.

Police source said that forty-two pits with a depth of around 1.5 feet were dug and the devotees made to lie inside them.

“Instead of the usual practice of covering the devotees with mud, only yellow cloths were used,” an official said. The priest, carrying the idol of the deity, hopped over the pits.

The devotees had to lie in the pits for a few minutes.

The Virudhunagar Superintendent of Police, D. Krishnamoorthy, said that there was no risk involved to the life of devotees.
