CHENNAI: Indians performed quite well in the U.S. Open table tennis championships, which concluded at Las Vegas last week winning two titles. Nitin Vasanthphilips won the junior boys singles with an 11-8, 11-7, 11-3 win over fellow Indian Sourav Saha. Rajib Sarkar clinched the cadet boys’ title defeating James Fan of Canada 11-4, 11-4, 4-11, 12-10 in the final. T. Reeth Rishya and Monika Batra lost in the final of the cadet and youth girls respectively. Reeth lost to Anne Deng of USA 11-3, 11-4, 8-11, 4-11, 11-6, while Monika Batra fought well before losing to Amelie Solja of Germany 9-11, 11-6, 13-11, 8-11, 11-9, 15-13. Sumana R. Krishnan reached the semifinals of the junior girls’ section while R. Venkataramanan entered the last four in the junior boys’ category.
