Stress on women’s literacy

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: Population explosion can be checked through women literacy and educating the youth, said C. Kathiravan, Collector in charge.

He was speaking at a seminar organised here in connection with World Population Day on Saturday. Mr. Kathiravan said according to statistics, one child was born every 27 minutes in India and at this rate the population would grow by 1.5 crore every year.

On the one hand, life expectancy had increased owing to medical inventions and on the other, number of births had been on the rise. Unchecked population growth would have a great stress on farm lands and habitations, he said.

Prizes distributed

Mr. Kathiravan gave away prizes to winners of essay competitions.

Joint Director (Health services) R. Dharmalingam, Deputy Director (Health) R. Krishnaraj and Government Engineering College Principal Rajamanickam L. Saye participated.
