KOZHIKODE: The District Consumer Protection Committee has asked the authorities to implement their decision of making uniform the money charged for food at hotels. The annual conference of the committee held here recently condemned the move of hotel owners in Kozhikode city, Vadakara and Koyilandy to increase the price of food served. The conference called upon the Sales Tax Department to end the discrepancies in levying tax under Value Added Tax (VAT) when people buy timber from timber merchants. VAT levyThe 12.5 per cent VAT was imposed on consumers buying timber from government depots for the purpose of resale. However, the department was levying 12.5 per cent VAT on every resale of the timber, it said. This would only increase the price of the item sold; the tax did not reach the government, it said. City Corporation deputy mayor P.T. Abdul Latheef inaugurated the annual conference. Committee district president T.K.A. Azeez presided over. Environmentalist A. Achyuthan introduced the topic at the seminar on ‘The consumer who was being cheated.’ Committee’s district general secretary U. Ramachandran spoke.
