Rs. 96-crore water project will be implemented soon, says Moily

Staff Correspondent

Parts of Bangalore Rural district will get Cauvery water

M. Veerappa Moily

CHICKABALLAPUR: Union Minister for Law and Justice M. Veerappa Moily on Saturday said the State Government had taken up a Rs. 96-crore project to supply Cauvery water to parts of Bangalore Rural district.

Devanahalli and Hoskote taluks in Bangalore Rural district would get Cauvery water and the project would be implemented shortly, Mr. Moily said at a function organised by the Congress at Devanahalli to felicitate him.

Listing out various State and Central projects that were in the pipeline for the Chickaballapur Lok Sabha constituency spread across Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural and Chickaballapur districts, Mr. Moily said the State Government would soon take up the South Pinakani project to address the drinking water and irrigation needs of Yelahanka, Devanahalli and parts of Chickaballapur district.

Mr. Moily said Minister for Water Resources Basavaraj Bommai had told him that the South Pinakini project plan was ready and the Government had released Rs. 5 crore towards it. The project, however, would not be a major one that could help entire Bangalore Rural and Chickaballapur districts, the Union Minister added.

Mr. Moily said the Centre had sanctioned Rs. 80 crore under the Central Road Fund for development of roads in the Chickaballapur constituency. Besides, Union Minister for Surface Transport and Highways Kamal Nath had in principle agreed to upgrade State Highway 9 to national highway.

State Highway 9 passes through Yelahanka, Doddaballapur and Gauribidanur and touches National Highway 7 near Somandepalli in Ananthapur district of Andhra Pradesh. On June 11, Mr. Moily made a proposal to Mr. Nath to take steps to upgrade the State highway to national highway as it would provide an impetus to the economic development of the region.

Mr. Moily said that as he had promised in his election manifesto for the constituency, steps would be taken to establish an industrial corridor from Devanahalli to Bagepalli in Chickaballapur district, bordering Andhra Pradesh on National Highway 7. Talks had been held with some industries and proposals received from some of them. Farmland would not be acquired for the proposed project.

The Centre was firm on establishing an Indian Institute of Technology at Muddenahalli on the outskirts of the city, the birth place of Sir. M. Visvesvaraya, Mr. Moily said.

Congress MLAs Venkataswamy (Devanahalli), N.H. Shivashankar Reddy (Gauribidanur) and N. Sampangi (Bagepalli) were present.
