Loan waiver for beneficiaries of Ashraya scheme demanded

Correspondent

Chikmagalur: Sachin Meega, president of the District Youth Congress, has urged the State Government to waive loans given to the poor under the Ashraya housing scheme.

He said a delegation from the district will meet the concerned Minister in Bangalore in this regard.

Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, Mr. Meega said his party workers conducted a survey of the beneficiaries under this scheme in the district and found that their economic condition is bad and they are unable to repay the loan. Stating that the Union Government has granted funds for formation of sites and construction of houses under the Indira Awaz Yojana, he pointed out that there was no loan component under this scheme.

Poor utilisation

Regretting that the State Government has failed to implement this scheme properly, he said as much as Rs. 233.15 lakh was unutilised in the district as on June 15.

A.N. Mahesh, spokesperson of the District Congress Committee, said the rank and file of his party were unhappy that the long-standing demand of Kadur-Chikmagalur railway line did not find any mention in the Railway Budget.

Delegation

He said a delegation from the district will meet K.H. Muniyappa, Union Minister of State for Railways, in Bangalore on Saturday and urge him to get Rs. 60 crores sanctioned for the project.

He said that in addition to this, an appeal will be made to take up renovation of railway stations in Tarikere, Shivani, Ajjampura, Birur, and Kadur.
