District Collector B. Janardhan Reddy said every citizen should take it upon as a responsibility to raise plants and protect the existing ones. The administration was launching a massive awareness programme on the need of plantation in the district by inspiring students in schools and colleges.

A plan was being prepared to plant trees in every vacant site including school and office premises, housing colonies, along the roads and other places. Chief Conservator of Forests of Anantapur Circle S.N. Jadhav stated that every person should make efforts raise plants equivalent to the usage of wood by him throughout his/her life.

Every person should plant a sapling and take a pledge to safeguard it, Mr. Shashi Bhushan Kumar said. Mr. Mishra said while the population grew by leaps and bounds, the forest cover dwindled rapidly. He called for steps to safeguard forest wealth.

Growing environmental pollution was damaging the ozone layer and hence the day temperature was around 42 degrees C and further heat wave conditions could prevail if greenery was not promoted, the Mayor said. Saplings were being planted in road dividers, ring road and all over Kadapa, he said.

They gave away prizes to winners of elocution and essay writing competitions conducted by the Forest Department. Divisional Forest Officers C.P. Vinod Kumar and Sagar, sub-DFO Nagaraju, teachers and students participated.
