AVM Saravanan giving clap to Tamil movie Ponnar-Sankar, at a function in Chennai on Sunday. CHENNAI: The shooting for Ponnar-Sankar, a film based on Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s novel, was launched on Sunday. The story is about two warrior brothers, who were legends in the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu. There are folklores and ballads narrating the bravery of Ponnar and Sankar. Annanmar Kathai is one among them. Mr. Karunanidhi penned a novel based on the story and it was serialised in the Tamil weekly, ‘Kumkum’ Actor Prasanth plays the role of both Ponnar and Sankar and the film is produced by his father, Thiagarajan. There are as many as 36 main characters and many leading actors of the Tamil film industry, including Sathyaraj, Rajkiran and Napoleon, the actor-turned- Union Minister.Mr. Napoleon, starring as Thalaiyur Kali, said he had obtained permission from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to act in the film. Mr. Karunanidhi, who formally launched the shooting, said the film would offer an opportunity to the film world to tap the full potential of Prasanth as an actor. Mr. Thiyagarajan said 60 per cent of the film would be graphics. Abiramai Ramanathan felt the film would be a runaway success. Corrections and ClarificationsAn editing error resulted in the name of the Tamil weekly Kungumam becoming Kumkum in the second paragraph of a report "'Ponnar-Sankar' shooting begins" (Tamil Nadu, July 13, 2009).
