Gilani seeks all-party support

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has sought support from all political parties in the country ahead of his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Sharm-al-Shaikh, Egypt, later this week.

Mr. Gilani called Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leader Nawaz Sharif on Sunday and briefed him about his upcoming meeting with the Indian leader on the sidelines of the NAM summit at the seaside resort, according to the State-run Associated Press of Pakistan.

He is also reported to have “taken into confidence” a host of other political leaders, including PML(Q) leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, the Awami National Party’s Asfandyar Wali Khan (ANP), Farooq Sattar of MQM and leaders of the Jamat-e-Islami.

Mr. Sharif is said to have assured the Prime Minister of his party’s full support to the government “on Pakistan’s stance and the need for resolving all outstanding issues confronting India and Pakistan peacefully through talks.”
