Maoists kill 30 police personnel in Chhattisgarh

Raipur: Thirty police personnel, including a Superintendent of Police, were killed on Sunday in three attacks by Maoists in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh.

Rajnandgaon SP Vinod Kumar Choubey was killed when he was leading forces for Madanwada, where naxals killed two policemen in the morning, after being ambushed between Khoregaon and Karkoti, according to Deputy Inspector General of Police (Naxal) Pawan Dev. Rajnandgaon is about 90 km from Raipur.

Intense firing

In the intense gun battle that followed the ambush, Mr. Choubey and 23 policemen lost their lives.

In a separate attack, naxalites set off landmines and ambushed another team of policemen, which left Sitagaon for Madanwada. Four policemen were killed in this attack, the DIG said. The CRPF has rushed 600 of its men to the site of attacks.

The troops, belonging to Rajnandgaon-based 188th battalion of the force and equipped with mine detection kits and rescue equipment, were rushed to the spot to start combing operations against Maoists. The Station House Officer (SHO) of the Madanpara police station, near the ambush site, was also killed in the attack, official sources said. Security forces were combing the area to hunt for rebels and look for the bodies of the policemen, sources said. — PTI
