SPIRIT OF INVENTIVENESS: The all-terrain vehicle developed by the final year mechanical engineering students of Mar Athanasius Engineering College, Kothamangalam. KOCHI: They are crazy about vehicles and it was natural that the youngsters came up with something really special when they thought of making one. For the seven-member final year mechanical engineering students of the Mar Athanasius Engineering College at Kothamangalam, the development of a continuous track driven all-terrain vehicle was a challenge. And they completed it successfully. “We wanted to create something unique,” Giju Baiju, team member said while elaborating on the mechanical aspects of the vehicle. The model has similar design features, as that of a battle tank. Its optimum loading capacity is about 500 kg, he said. The young techies claimed that the vehicle was designed to cover all terrains including mountain ranges and sand dunes. They said it could be useful for farmers who work in high ranges and uneven land surfaces. It could be also employed in areas where beach tourism is popular. Nearly Rs. 38,000 was spent on making the model. Earnest Markose Mathew, faculty member of the engineering college, supported and guided the youngsters in making their dream a reality. The other team members are Abin C. Devasya, Shan Babu Thottam, Jibin M. S., Rakesh K. R., Nithin Anand, and Neeraj Krishnan.
