Five doctors honoured

Their outstanding clinical and community services hailed

PUDUKOTTAI: Five doctors were honoured at the “Doctors’ Day” observed jointly by the Pudukkottai chapter of the Indian Medical Association and the Meenakshi Mission Hospital, Madurai, at a function held here on Sunday.

The doctors honoured were S. Subbiah; Jayam Kannan; Alice Juliana Chellappa, Manimegalai and Suganya. The non-medical award went to the Principal Secretary to Government, Qudsia Gandhi.

A citation presented on the occasion referred to the doctors’ outstanding clinical and community services by organising several camps at different parts of the district and state.

The ‘Lifetime Achievement’ went to Dr. Jayam Kannan in recognition of her services in the cause of the women’s health care and also the implementation of the ‘Save the Girl Child’ programme. Ms. Qudsia Gandhi got the “Best Woman IAS Officer for the year 2009” award.

Speaking after giving away the award, the former Union Minister of State for Forests and Environment, S. Regupathy, underlined the need for observing the “Doctors’ Day” as a community celebration, with mass participation.

He hoped that the Medical Insurance Scheme to be introduced in the State shortly would ensure adequate insurance coverage to the rural masses.

The president of the Pudukottai Chapter of the IMA, The former Minister K. Vezhavendan attributed the doctors’ services to the fall in the mortality rate.

Ms. Qudsia Gandhi spoke on the support she got from her family members in pursuing higher education and achieving higher desired goals.

The president of the district chapter of IMA, K. Shanmugasundaram, spoke on the objectives of the “Doctors’ Day.”
