Transsexuals seek housing colony

Staff Reporter

Approach officials for benefits under various government schemes

MARGINALISED LOT: Transsexuals assemble at the Collectorate in Anantapur on Monday to represent their problems on grievance day.

ANANTAPUR: Transsexuals living in and around the district headquarters town urged the district administration to sanction them a special housing colony under the Indiramma scheme. They also sought benefits of other welfare schemes being implemented by the government.

A team of transsexuals met District Revenue Officer G. Joshi Babu and Anantapur Rural Tehsildar Ramakrishna Reddy and represented their problems. They urged the officials to sanction bank assistance given to self-help groups for taking up income generation activities.

They were fed up eking out livelihood seeking alms, mostly from traders in urban areas. In spite of requests to officials at different levels they were not being considered for government welfare schemes, they alleged.

They had been approaching the officials concerned for ration cards, Indiramma houses and welfare pensions for the old and physically-challenged, but in vain. They were also in need of financial assistance from banks for taking up livelihood activities and lead a respectful life.
