KAPETTA: The Seed Village Programme of the Union government to supply quality seeds at a subsidised price in every district will be launched at Thirunelly in Wayanad on Tuesday. In the first phase, the programme will be implemented on 1,000 hectares of land in five districts in the State. Farmers will be given certified rice seeds and technical guidance. Eighty kg of seeds needed on an hectare of land will be provided at Rs.9.50 a kg. The seeds will be procured through the Krishi Bhavans, Shajan Mathew, Agriculture Officer, Kerala State Seeds Development Authority, the nodal agency, told The Hindu. As much as 1,860 kg of the Uma variety of rice seeds would be distributed during the ‘nanja’ crop season in the district. Mr. Mathew said training programmes would be held for the farmers at the time of sowing, flowering and harvesting. O.R. Kelu, president, Thirunelly grama panchayat, will inaugurate the training on Tuesday.
