Jyoti Basu’s condition improving

Staff Reporter

KOLKATA: The condition of veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu, who was admitted to a city hospital on Sunday morning after he lost consciousness for a brief period, is stable, hospital authorities said on Monday.

There has been an improvement in all parameters of his health, according to a bulletin issued by the hospital. His blood pressure, which was fluctuating on Sunday, has also stabilised. He has now been put on a soft diet, but remains in the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit.

President Pratibha Patil sent Mr. Basu a bouquet and her wishes for speedy recovery, Rashtrapati Bhavan sources said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee were among those who visited him at the hospital.

“Mr. Basu was awake and looked well when I met him,” Ms. Banerjee told journalists outside the hospital. “I want him to get well soon.”

A team of seven specialists, monitoring his condition, recommended a CT scan in the morning.

It indicated that Mr. Basu’s health had improved since the previous scan done in October last.
