India and 13 other member-States requested inscription in the General Assembly’s 1959 agenda of the item “Race conflict in the Union of South Africa resulting from the policies of Apartheid of the Government of the Union of South Africa,” in New York on July 15. A memorandum attached to the request recalled the resolution of 1958 General Assembly which expressed “regret and concern” that the Government of South Africa had not responded to appeals of the Assembly that it reconsiders “Governmental policies which impair the right of all racial groups to enjoy the same rights and fundamental freedoms.”
