Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE: Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI) will hold here on July 25 a national consultative meeting on developing a national dementia strategy.

A press release from the organisers has said that the objective was to identify ways to carry forward the movement for the care of patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

The release said that with increasing life expectancy, the number of people with dementia in the country was also on the rise.

It was estimated that nearly three million elderly people in the country suffered from a progressive brain disorder. District Collector P. Umanath would be the chief guest at the inaugural of the meeting.

Topics to be discussed included ‘Overview of Dementia in India -- Challenges Ahead’, ‘Role of Memory Clinics in Early Diagnosis of Dementia -- Indian Scenario’ and ‘Dementia: Growing Public Health Challenges in India’.

The role of society, family and social workers in providing care to the patients would also be discussed at the meeting. For details, contact Selvaraj (phone: 98422-59062) or Vijayalakshmi (97861-33333).
