Clearing of goods vehicles delayed Tamil Nadu diverts vehicles PALAKKAD: Delay in clearing of goods vehicles at the inter-State Walayar check-post has resulted in traffic block in the last two days.Hundreds of goods vehicles have queued up at the check-post for clearance, affecting movement of passenger vehicles from Kerala to Tamil Nadu. The traffic congestion that started on Wednesday evening still continues as there is heavy flow of goods vehicles to Walayar after the Tamil Nadu authorities diverted vehicles from Gopalapuram. The move was necessitated by the landslip which blocked the Pollachi-Gopalapuram road. Heavy vehicles are required to pass through the main Walayar check-post. Small vehicles carrying goods of less value can pass through other check-posts. But these vehicles are also diverted to Walayar since heavy rains have wrecked roads in many places. The delay is said to be due to thorough checking of vehicles at the Excise check-post. The department had intensified checking due to the recent spurt in the smuggling of spirit through Walayar. Another reason is the delay in the Commercial Taxes check-post due to shortage of staff. The worst affected are the crew of the goods vehicles as they have to wait for hours in the heavy rain at Walayar.
