Free Internet facility for government college students

BANGALORE: Students of government colleges and polytechnics across the State can soon begin accessing Internet facility for free on their campus.

Cyber kiosks offering high-speed broadband Internet will be set up in 170 government colleges and 59 polytechnics during the next one year. An estimated three lakh students, most of whom are studying in government colleges and polytechnics in rural areas, can benefit from the facility.

The Department of Collegiate Education and the Department of Technical Education entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a private company in Bangalore on Thursday to kick-start the unique public-private initiative taken up to promote computer literacy among government college students.

Speaking to presspersons later, Minister for Higher Education Aravind Limbavali said the private company, NETHOTZONE, had agreed to install four computers with a 19-inch LCD monitor connected to high speed broadband Internet.

Emphasising the need to promote Internet accessibility among students to enhance their knowledge, Mr. Limbavali said a printer would also be installed in the kiosks to facilitate the students to download study material. Even though Internet browsing was free, the students would have to pay a nominal fee for getting printouts of the study material.

This initiative was expected to supplement the 2,500 computers provided by the Department of Higher Education to various government colleges, he said.

Commissioner for Collegiate Education Nagambika Devi said steps would be taken to cover all the 356 government colleges under the initiative in the next phase. “After covering the chosen 170 colleges in the first phase during the next one year, we will take steps to take the scheme to the remaining colleges in the State”, she said.
