Sapling planting drive in Namakkal

Part of programme aimed at planting one crore saplings in the district Over 8,000 students, farmers, elected representatives and officials participate
NAMAKKAL: Over 5,000 saplings were planted in the massive tree plantation exercise launched by the Namakkal district administration in the Collectorate complex here on Thursday.
The exercise was carried out as a part of the administration’s ambitious programme introduced by Collector U. Sagayam to plant one crore saplings in the district.
Over 8,000 students from various schools, elected representatives, members of voluntary organisations, farmers and officials participated in the exercise and planted the saplings on the Collectorate premises.
Inaugurating the exercise, Mr. Sagayam said over eight lakh saplings were planted in different parts of the district in six phases under the programme.
The administration had involved people from all sections of the society for the implementation of the programme, which aimed at increasing the green cover in the district.
Principal District Judge Elangovan, Superintendent of Police A. Pari, District Forest officer Asish Kumar Srivastava, District Revenue officer K. Shanthi and senior officials were present.
