Protest against decision to stop TV distribution

Staff Reporter

KRISHNAGIRI: The clash, which erupted over distribution of free colour television sets, created panic in Bargur for which by-election has been announced.

A total of 3,750 colour TV sets were stacked in the four classrooms of the Bargur Government Girls Higher Secondary School on Thursday. As the election notification came in the midst of distribution arrangements, it was stopped abruptly.

It is alleged that a furious crowd thronged the school and started shouting slogans against the decision to stop distribution. They broke open the lock of a room and partly damaged another lock in the school. On seeing the police personnel, the crowd ran away from the scene and the rooms were sealed in the presence of T. Sivaraj, Special Deputy Collector, CTV and Krishnagiri RDO Anbarasan.

To avoid untoward incidents, armed policemen were posted before each room.

District Election Officer V.K. Shanmugam told ‘The Hindu’ that as soon as the election announcement came, the distribution of TV sets was stopped.

When asked about the disturbance to students, he said in a day or two the TVs will be moved to another location. Free TVs were being kept in 15 schools.

The Bargur police have filed a case against Jayaraman, AIADMK Bargur Town Secretary, on the charge of disturbing officials from discharging their duties.
