Special Correspondent

The initiative is being taken as part of a programme launched by the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan.

KANNUR: Steps are under way to make school science, mathematics and social studies laboratories in the district ‘learner-friendly labs’ to equip students to use them without hassles for observation and experiments.

The initiative is being taken as part of the ‘Galileo Little Scientist 2009’ programme launched by the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) to welcome the International Year of Astronomy.

Spirit of science

The programme envisaged inculcation of the spirit of science in children and enhancement of the quality of learning science, mathematics and social studies, a press release from the SSA Project Office informed here on Friday.

The release said that activities for arranging the labs would begin by July 21. There was also plan to distribute telescopes and observatory kits free of cost among upper primary schools in the district. Panels, posters and brochures and compact discs on astronomy-related topics would also be offered to the labs, it said.

Topic-related workbooks having 44 pages each would also be given to the students, it said, adding that training for teachers as part of this had already been completed. Telescopes had been installed in all panchayat/municipal centres in the district as part of the Astronomy year. panchayat/school-level study camps were also planned this year.

These telescopes and observatories would be inaugurated before the total solar eclipse on July 22. Students’ observations would be presented in panchayat, district and State levels.
