Centre told to submit 1962 war report

Staff Reporter

To gauge whether

it could be made public

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has asked the Centre to submit to it in a sealed cover the Lieutenant-General Henderson Brooks report on the 1962 Sino-India war to see whether it could be declassified and made public.

The Court passed the direction on a petition by noted journalist and former Member of the Rajya Sabha Kuldip Nayar seeking a direction by the Court to declassify the report. The report is an analysis of the war.

Its authors are Lieutenant-General Henderson Brooks and Brigadier P S Bhagat, Commandant of the Indian Military Academy at the time.

The report is said to be openly critical of the Indian political and military structure of the time, as well as of the execution of operations.

Appearing for the petitioner, advocate Rajiv Nayar submitted that the report should have been made available in the National Archives of India 30 years after it was submitted to the Government.

Four decades old

It was now more than four decades old, he added.

The Court asked the Government to place the report before it by October 22.
