Student fatally knocked down

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: A 21-year-old college student died after he was hit by a sand lorry on Medavakkam-Sholinganallur Road on Thursday.

Traffic police said S. Sathish, a final year B.Com student at Mohamed Sathak College of Arts and Science, belonged to Narayanpuram, Pallikaranai. He was returning home on a motorcycle along with a friend, Prakash.

When he tried avoid a pothole on the road, he was hit by a lorry from behind. The two-wheeler came under the wheels of the lorry and Sathish sustained serious internal injuries, the police said. The accident took place at 3.30 p.m. He was rushed to a private hospital nearby and later referred to Government General Hospital in Chennai, where he died later in the day.

Students who came to the college on Friday morning were shocked. They gathered near the main gate and tried to stage a ‘road roko.’ But, personnel from Thoraipakkam police station, who reached the spot, prevented the protest. The students blamed drivers of heavy vehicles for rash driving, the police said.
