Voluntary compliance with TDS stressed

HYDERABAD: Chief Commissioner of Income-Tax I (Andhra Pradesh) Radha Srivastava has called for better voluntary compliance with the tax deduction at source (TDS) for improved revenue collection.

Inaugurating a symposium on TDS organised by the IT department, she pointed out that TDS accounted for 40 per cent of the total IT collection. The compliance levels in the State were satisfactory, except for some areas. While total collections were Rs.17, 213 crore in 2008-09, TDS accounted for Rs.6,925 crore.

She said TDS helped increase cash flows to the government, as there would be remittances throughout the year. The TDS collections in the State had increased three fold in the last few years. There was scope for improved collection by complying with rules, provisions and tax measures.‘The growth can be even better and I feel that Andhra Pradesh can lead in TDS collections’.She urged those responsible for TDS to update themselves with latest provisions and comply with them. The department had embarked on modernisation and the functioning had become e-driven.
