Poll code comes into force in four districts

Bangalore: The model code of conduct has come into force in Ramanagaram, Chamarajanagar, Gulbarga and Bangalore Urban districts where byelections will be held to the Legislative Assembly from five constituencies on August 18.

The Election Commission has ordered byelections to the Assembly from Channapatna in Ramanagaram district, Kollegal in Chamarajanagar district, Chitapur in Gulbarga district and Govindarajanagar in Bangalore Urban district. The model code of conduct will be in force till August 21 when the results will be announced.

State Chief Electoral Officer C.S. Suranjana told presspersons on Saturday that all activities in these districts, including execution of development projects, will come under the purview of the election authorities.

Asked about the Government extending special packages to Channapatna and Govindarajanagar, Mr. Suranjana said the authorities would look into it. However, implementation of projects, which commenced prior to the announcement of the byelections, could be continued, he added.

The election notification will be issued on July 22 and filing of nomination papers will begin the same day. The last date for filing of nomination papers is July 29 and for withdrawal is August 1. Electoral rolls revised as on January 1, 2009, will be applicable although new voters can register their names till Monday. The Chitapur segment has 1,81,233 voters, Govindarajanagar 2,70,840, Ramanagaram 1,76,153, Channapatna 1,86,078, and Kollegal 1,82,950. There will be 200 polling stations in Chitapur, 215 in Govindarajanagar, 251 in Ramanagaram, 227 in Channapatna and 197 in Kollegal.
