NEW DELHI: Former Municipal Corporation of Delhi Standing Committee chairman Vijendra Gupta has stated that the Delhi Government’s insistence on holding Independence Day celebrations at the Ambedkar Stadium near Delhi Gate at the cost of the Nehru Cup International Football Tournament is “totally unreasonable and will adversely affect the quality of the game”. Mr. Gupta said since the I-Day celebrations can be held at a number of other venues including the Police Lines ground at Kingsway Camp, the insistence on holding the function at the Ambedkar Stadium “shows sheer callousness towards sports”. He said it would be better if football tournaments were allowed to be held in stadiums meant for them and built as per international specifications. Mr. Gupta said it was a matter of serious concern for sports-lovers that even as the All India Football Federation continues to work for sprucing up the Ambedkar Stadium to come up to international standards, the venue is simultaneously being prepared to hold the Delhi Government’s I-Day celebrations. The Chhatrasal Stadium, he said, used to be the venue for the I-Day celebrations over the years but it is unavailable now due to renovations for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The change in venue would affect the quality of turf at the Ambedkar Stadium which is to host the six-team tournament from August 18. “The celebrations will definitely harm the texture of the field. There will be only two days in between. This short time is not sufficient for re-working the patches,” he warned. The BJP leader said he has also written to Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna requesting him to shift the venue of the I-Day celebrations. “It is ironic that on the one hand we are preparing for the Commonwealth Games and on the other we are discouraging games,” he added.
