Rita Bahuguna gets interim bail

Atiq Khan

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who was arrested for making objectionable comments against Chief Minister Mayawati, was granted interim bail till July 29 by the Additional District Judge of Moradabad on Saturday. She was asked to submit two sureties for Rs. 30,000 each.

The ADJ on Friday reserved order on the bail plea of Ms. Joshi, who had been arrested and sent to judicial custody for 14 days. She was lodged in the Moradabad district jail.

A first information report was lodged in the Majhola police station under the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989; Sections 153 A (promoting enmity between two groups on ground of religion or caste) and 509 (word or gesture aimed at outraging the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 7 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act.

On Friday, the names of Jitendra Singh Babloo, Bahujan Samaj Party MLA from Bikapur; and Intezar Abidi Bobby, former president of the party’s Lucknow unit, were included in the FIR, reportedly at the behest of the Chief Minister.

Earlier, on Wednesday night, following Ms. Joshi’s remarks, her house here and four vehicles were set afire by unidentified persons, who were allegedly escorted by a BSP MLA and other party members.

Five persons were arrested by the Lucknow police in this connection.
