MANGALORE: A meeting of top officials and elected representatives, chaired by district in-charge Minister J. Krishna Palemar on Saturday, decided to ban the movement of lorries transporting iron ore on B.C. Road between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. The move comes close on the heels of the ban on such lorries in Udupi district. Bantwal MLA B. Ramanath Rai insisted on such a decision being taken at the meeting, which had been convened to review the progress of development projects. Mr. Palemar said that the meeting be restricted to discuss the issues of serious concern. Mr. Rai pressed for ban on the movement of ore-laden lorries and “bullet” tankers. But he agreed to the Minister’s suggestion that these lorries could be allowed during night and the tankers spared from the purview of the ban. Mr. Palemar directed Puttur Assistant Commissioner Harish Kumar to issue the ban order. The meeting took serious note of the meagre compensation given to farmers who lost standing crops and to the owners of houses damaged in rains. When an officer said that a banana plant destroyed in rains would get a compensation of Rs. 0.22, the Minister said: “It is ridiculous.” He asked the officials to identify beneficiaries of housing schemes and stop harassing those who came for certificates.
