One killed in firing during Army recruitment

Atiq Khan

LUCKNOW: One person was killed when applicants gathered for Army recruitment in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh clashed with security personnel on Sunday. The casualty occurred when the latter fired at the job aspirants.

Unofficial reports said that five persons were killed in the clash and the subsequent stampede, but the authorities tried to sweep the incident under the carpet.

The State government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh told journalists here that the Commissioner of Varanasi division and the Deputy Inspector-General (Range) were supervising security operations. Additional forces have also been deployed, he said.

It is alleged that trouble erupted when security personnel roughed up some applicants, following which they threw stones and bricks. Security personnel then opened fire to disperse them resulting in the death of one person.

The government has asked the Defence Ministry that coordination with local authorities be sought for recruitment exercises in future, Mr. Singh said.

PTI reports:

“A case has been registered at Chandauli police station and over a dozen persons have been detained for their alleged involvement in the incident,” PRO, DGP, Gopesh Khanna said.
