Rain claims eight more lives in Orissa

NEW DELHI: Eight more people ded in the heavy rain that battered Orissa on Sunday, even as the rain-deficient north received light to moderate showers at several places.

Low-lying areas were flooded and major rivers burst the banks in Orissa, as heavy rain snapped road links and disrupted power supply at many places. Death toll in the past one week is now 36.

In the north, rain lashed parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, where the monsoon showed signs of gaining momentum. It was subdued in the National Capital and some other places.

The level in the Hirakud reservoir across the Mahanadi , which had full capacity of 630 ft, rose to 613.12 feet, as rain pounded Ganjam, Gajapati, Cuttack, Puri and other districts since Saturday night.— PTI
